Frequently Asked Questions about MIKA
Ke Kula Pōʻaono o MIKA (MIKA’s Saturday School)
How old does my child need to be?
We center our activities towards 0-5 years old but the whole ‘ohana is welcome! Participants must have a child though.
How fluent do I need to be in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian) to come?
All levels of fluency are more than welcome to come! No ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi experience is needed; Kumu Kamalei is only 2+ years into her own journey and we will all be supporting each other. All you need is a love for our language and an interest in learning it and passing it down to your keiki (child).
Do I need to be a member of Moku'āina A Wakinekona to participate?
We encourage all MIKA ʻohana (families) to sign up to be a member of our Moku'āina A Wakinekona (Click here to learn more about MAWHCC Membership rates). You do not need to be a member to come to Ke Kula Pōʻaono o MIKA, but our MAWHCC are prioritized in registration.
If you want to be a member but cannot afford membership, please contact Kamalei Brandon mika@mawhcc.org - her ʻohana is able to sponsor some ʻohana (families) that are in need of a membership and are actively participating in MIKA programming.
Can I just drop off my kids?
No, a parent/guardian must stay with the child(ren) at all times. This time is meant to be a fun growing opportunity for the whole ʻohana.
What can we expect at Ke Kula Pōʻaono o MIKA (MIKA’s Saturday School)?
We will be doing some free play at first as people come into the room. Then, we will do a short circle time with songs and a moʻolelo (story). Afterwards, we will do activities that align with the theme and objectives for that month.
How much does it cost?
This event is free, but donations are always welcome and greatly appreciated. You can donate to Moku'āina A Wakinekona: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=4DMPZ4EEETJK2.
What should I bring?
Just you, your kamaliʻi (young child/baby), and your ʻohana! Feel free to bring a light snack and waterbottle for your child if you think that they will be hungry. You may also want to bring a diaper bag, extra clothes, or any other supplies you typically need when leaving the house with your keiki.
Is there parking at the location?
Our location is in Columbia City, Seattle, WA. There is free 2-hour parking on the streets and some paid lots/paid street parking. Make sure to look at the signage when coming. It is also by a few major bus lines and the Link Light Rail, so check Google Maps for transit information.
